Tips for Being a Successful Student

Log in to Blackboard before the first day of class

Blackboard is the site you will use to access your courses. Logging in before the semester starts will allow you to familiarize yourself with the system and work through the Online Success Lab, a non-credit, self-paced short course available to all eLearning students. The Online Success Lab has numerous modules (click the ‘Assignments’ link in the menu bar) that introduce you to online learning and prepare you for success.

Create a schedule

All eLearning courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set meeting times. Using a calendar will help you keep up with assignments and assessments throughout the semester. Email us at uaf-elearning@alaska.edu if you’d like a UAF eLearning weekly planner! If you prefer digital, utilize your Google Calendar.

Identify a proctor

Some courses require proctored exams, meaning a neutral, third-party person will verify your identity and supervise the exams. Check your syllabus to see if any of your courses have this requirement. If so, find a proctor early in the semester to avoid late exams. Detailed information on how to do so can be found here.

Engage with your online community

Your classmates could be located throughout the world and each provides a unique perspective to the topic at hand. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn from your peers — and don’t be shy, stay in touch!
